George Budget Travel
The small town of George is a popular stop on the famous Garden Route. The town is surrounded by beautiful beaches and ancient forests. George is a great place to stay in while you explore all that the Garden Route has to offer.
Take a trip on the Outeniqua choo choo from George to the nearby town of Knysna. The old steam train is a fun way to see the spectacular coastline between the two towns. At some points the railway line appears to hang from the side of a cliff. You will get to see the Knysna lagoon which is famous for its wide variety of rare bird species and you can bird watch from the train window. On arrival in Knysna enjoy a lunch of fresh oysters. The town is well known for its oysters and the numerous arts and crafts shops. Explore the art galleries before returning to George in the afternoon. If you have time in Knysna, try a boat cruise on the lagoon out through the Knysna heads to sea. The heads tend to be very choppy and this can be a fun ride if you don’t get seasick. A number of the boats stop at the Featherbed Nature Reserve next to the lagoon. Join one of the guided hikes to see the nesting sites of a number of rare bird species.
If you are feeling very brave take a day trip to the Bloukrans Bridge and enjoy the world’s highest bungee jump from a bridge. Enjoy the thrill of free falling for 218 metres before the bungee cord grips you. If you love adrenalin then this is the place for you. Face Adrenalin runs buses on a daily basis from George to the jump site. After you jump head to the bar/restaurant and enjoy a drink while you watch others jumping off the bridge. You can always have a quick drink before you jump if you need a spot of courage.
The most famous beach in the area is Victoria Bay which offers a safe swimming beach and a great spot for suffers looking for the perfect wave. Get there early in summer as the beach is small and fills up quickly. In winter the water is a bit cold for swimming but the beach is still lovely to walk along.
You will find a number of interesting places to eat in George. The old centre of town is home to a few bistros and pubs such as the popular 101 Meade Street which has an eclectic menu and a great selection of craft beers. If you want budget fast food you can head to the Garden Route Mall on the outskirts of town. This new mall is quite large if you would like to indulge in a bit of retail therapy.
George Airport is very small but there are a few cheap car rental places and if you want local hire places you will find a few more in the centre of town. The selection is small but you should be able to find something in your price range.
