Caversham Mill Review

Caversham Mill – the place that started the Midlands Meander.

In 1984 a few brilliant people come up with the idea of the Midlands Meander while sitting at Caversham Mill. It certainly is a very inspiring place. I have celebrated many occasions at this lovely restaurant and recently we held my in-laws 50th wedding anniversary there. We had a few minor hiccups in the organising of the function and the staff at Caversham went out of their way to make changes and ensure everything ran smoothly on the night. The food was delicious and the setting spectacular. There is nowhere else in the Midlands that can fill you with a sense of peace as quickly as Caversham Mill.

You really need to sit out on the deck to really appreciate the beauty of the area and to get a view of the waterfall as the sun sets.

The menu is fairly short but has a number of interesting choices such as a Thai prawn curry starter, smoked game Carpaccio, rolled pork fillet stuffed with apricots and a deboned Midlands trout.  They run seasonal and daily specials using fresh, local ingredients.  The kids menu is basic but they will do smaller portions of a number of the main dishes. My son loves the Zulu spring rolls or the baked camembert from the starters menu.

On the night of my in-laws anniversary, the staff had decorated the deck with small candles and fairly lights. We had a large adults table with a white table cloth and glass, and a kids table with plastic and cute plastic decorations. All of this was done at no extra cost.

If you are in the Midlands or in need of a break from city life you need to do yourselves a favour and head to Caversham Mill. They have on-site accommodation if you feel like indulging in their well chosen wine list or a few local craft beers. This is great spot for a family gathering, night out with friends or an intimate romantic dinner.

We stayed at Caversham Mill in October 2015. Whilst the accommodation was satisfactory, I would like to urge would-be patrons to ensure that your insurance is up to date before visiting this establishment. Our car was damaged whilst parked within the confines of the property which is specifically allocated for guests. This was as a result of an umbrella belonging to Caversham Mill striking and damaging the car. The management claim they do not have third party liability insurance and suggest the only alternative would be to claim from our insurers as this gust of wind which caused the unsecured umbrella to fly into our car, breaking the window and damaging the bodywork was an act of God. Numerous attempts by insurers to communicate the Caversham owners and insurers have gone unanswered. Was it worth the visit – No!
